8.2 Multiplying Polynomials
Notes
- Monomial times polynomial: distribute. $2x(x^2 - 3x + 4) = 2x^3 - 6x^2 + 8x$.
- Binomial times binomial: multiply each term by each term (FOIL: first, outer, inner, last). $(x + 3)(x - 5) = x^2 - 5x + 3x - 15 = x^2 - 2x - 15$.
- Bigger products: multiply every term in the first by every term in the second, then combine like terms.
Practice
$(x + 4)(x + 6) =$
$x^2 + 6x + 4x + 24$.
$(2x - 1)(x + 3) =$
$2x^2 + 6x - x - 3$.
$-3a(a^2 - 2a + 5) =$
Distribute $-3a$ to each term.
