Notes
Solving step by step
- Use inverse operations on both sides to get the variable alone. Undo addition and subtraction first, then multiplication and division.
- Simplify each side first: distribute and combine like terms. Clear fractions by multiplying every term by the least common denominator.
- With variables on both sides, move them to one side. A false result like $2 = 9$ means no solution; a true result like $4 = 4$ means infinitely many solutions.
- Check by substituting your answer into the original equation.
Formulas, proportions and percents
- Solve literal equations for a chosen variable the same way: $\displaystyle A = \frac{1}{2}bh \Rightarrow h = \frac{2A}{b}$.
- Solve proportions with cross products: $\displaystyle \frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d} \Rightarrow ad = bc$.
- Percent change $\displaystyle = \frac{\text{new} - \text{original}}{\text{original}}$.
Absolute value
$|ax + b| = c$ with $c > 0$ splits into $ax + b = c$ or $ax + b = -c$. If $c < 0$ there is no solution.
Topics in this unit
Each topic has its own short notes and practice.
Practice
$8x - 12 = 6x + 10 \Rightarrow 2x = 22$.
Multiply by 2, then divide by $h$.
$\displaystyle \frac{3}{24} = \frac{x}{40} \Rightarrow 24x = 120$.
$|x - 2| = 4$, so $x - 2 = \pm 4$.
$\displaystyle \frac{2200 - 2500}{2500} = -0.12$.
Subtracting $5x$ leaves $-2 = 7$.

Free-response question
A gym charges a $50 sign-up fee plus $30 per month. A second gym charges no sign-up fee but $40 per month.
(a) Write an equation to find the number of months $m$ when the two gyms cost the same.
Show the answer and scoring guide
$50 + 30m = 40m$

(b) Solve your equation and interpret the answer.
Show the answer and scoring guide
$50 = 10m$, so $m = 5$. After 5 months both gyms cost $200.

(c) Which gym is cheaper for someone who joins for a year? By how much?
Show the answer and scoring guide
First gym: $50 + 30(12) = 410$. Second gym: $40(12) = 480$. The first gym is cheaper by $70.
