6.5 Memory, War and Storytelling

3 practice questionsNot yet reviewed

Notes

Some authors explore how memory and storytelling shape truth.

  • Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried (1990) presents linked stories about American soldiers in the Vietnam War. It blurs lines between fact and fiction to argue that a story can capture emotional truth ("story-truth") even when events are invented or reshaped.
  • Toni Morrison's Beloved (1987) is about Sethe, who escaped slavery but is haunted by her past. The novel treats memory as a presence that cannot simply be forgotten, and it mixes realistic history with the supernatural.
  • Both authors use nonlinear structure: time moves back and forth.
  • Worked example: a narrator who revisits a painful event several times from different angles shows how memory reshapes the past.
