English 12 / Unit 8: College and Career Writing
8.6 Revising for Clarity and Concision
Notes
Good professional and personal writing is revised.
- Cut wordiness: "due to the fact that" becomes "because."
- Prefer active voice ("I organized the event") to passive ("The event was organized by me") when you want to show action.
- Check tone, grammar, spelling and consistency of tense.
- Read aloud; ask someone else to read it; revise more than once.
- Remove filler such as "very," "really" and "in order to" when it adds nothing.
Practice
