English 12 / Unit 9: Advanced Argument and Synthesis
9.4 Synthesizing Sources
Notes
Synthesis combines ideas from multiple sources to support your own argument. It is not summary.
- Put sources in conversation: show where they agree, disagree or add complexity.
- Use sources as evidence for your claim, not the other way round. Your voice leads.
- Cite each source (for example, "Source A" or the author's name) and use a mix of quotes and paraphrase.
- Example: "While Source A shows improved attendance after a later start, Source B reminds us that benefits depend on transportation, which suggests that schools must plan for logistics."
