English 12 / Unit 9: Advanced Argument and Synthesis
9.6 Timed Writing Strategy
Notes
Timed argument and synthesis essays (for example, 40 minutes) reward planning.
- Spend the first 5 to 8 minutes planning: read the prompt, mark the task, decide your claim, outline 2 to 3 points and the concession.
- Write a clear thesis in the first paragraph. Use topic sentences.
- Use specific evidence from sources and brief commentary.
- Leave 3 to 5 minutes to review for clarity, grammar and missing words.
- If you run low on time, finish with a short conclusion rather than leaving the essay unfinished.
