English 9 / Unit 9: Grammar and Usage
9.6 Pronouns
Notes
Pronouns must be in the right case and must agree with a clear antecedent (the word they replace).
- Subject case: I, he, she, we, they, who. Object case: me, him, her, us, them, whom.
- Test compound pronouns by removing the other person: "Jo and (I/me) left" becomes "I left."
- After prepositions use object case: "between you and me."
- Agreement: "The dog wagged its tail." Singular they is accepted for a person of unknown or nonbinary gender.
- Vague reference: "When Mia met Ella, she smiled." (Who smiled?) Revise to name the person.
