French 1 / Unit 7: Family and Possessives
7.2 Mon, Ton, Son
Notes
A possessive adjective shows who owns something. It agrees with the thing owned, not the owner.
| Owner | m. sing. | f. sing. | plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| my | mon | ma | mes |
| your (tu) | ton | ta | tes |
| his / her / its | son | sa | ses |
- mon père, ma mère, mes parents; ton frère, ta sœur, tes amis.
- son, sa, ses mean both "his" and "her": sa mère = his mother or her mother. The gender of the thing owned (mère = f.) decides.
- Before a feminine noun that starts with a vowel or silent h, use mon, ton, son: mon amie, ton école, son histoire.
- Example: Léa aime son frère et sa sœur.
