7.6 Describing Family Members
Notes
Combine possessives, être, avoir and adjectives to describe your family.
- Looks: Il a les cheveux bruns / blonds / noirs / roux. (hair: brown, blond, black, red) Elle a les yeux bleus / verts / marron.
- Note: les cheveux and les yeux are plural; eyes are bleus, but brown eyes: les yeux marron (never an s).
- Personality: Ma sœur est sympa et drôle. Mon père est sérieux. Ma tante est généreuse.
- Describe where they live or work: Mon oncle habite à Québec et travaille dans un hôpital.
- Example paragraph: J'ai un frère. Il s'appelle Max. Il a quinze ans et il est sportif. Il a les cheveux noirs et les yeux marron.
Practice
Complete: « Mon frère a les cheveux ___ . » (brown)
Cheveux is masculine plural, so the adjective is bruns.
Which phrase means "She has green eyes"?
Describe features with avoir + les yeux/cheveux. Yeux is plural so verts is plural.
Read: « Mon grand-père a 70 ans. Il habite avec ma grand-mère à Nice. Ils ont un chat. » Who has a cat?
Ils ont refers to grand-père and grand-mère.
