French 2 / Unit 5: Passé Composé vs Imparfait
5.2 Interrupted Actions
Notes
A passé composé event can interrupt an imparfait action in progress.
- Structure: imparfait (ongoing) + quand / lorsque + passé composé (interruption).
- Example: Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné. (I was sleeping when the phone rang.)
- Example: Nous mangions quand Paul est arrivé.
- Words that signal sudden events: soudain, tout à coup, un jour, ce jour-là, tout d'un coup.
- Two simultaneous ongoing actions use two imparfaits: Pendant que je lisais, il regardait la télé.
Practice
Which sentence correctly says "I was walking when I fell"?
The ongoing action (walking) is imparfait; the interruption (fell) is passé composé with être.
Which word signals a sudden event?
Soudain (suddenly) introduces a new event in the passé composé.
Complete: Pendant que nous ___ (regarder) un film, il ___ (pleuvoir).
Both actions are ongoing and simultaneous, so both are in the imparfait.
