1.2 Segments and Segment Addition
Notes
A segment $\overline{AB}$ is the part of a line between endpoints $A$ and $B$. Its length is written $AB$.
- A ray $\overrightarrow{AB}$ starts at $A$ and goes forever through $B$.
- Congruent segments have equal lengths: $\overline{AB} \cong \overline{CD}$ means $AB = CD$.
- Segment Addition Postulate: if $B$ is between $A$ and $C$, then $AB + BC = AC$.
- Example: $B$ is between $A$ and $C$, $AB = 2x + 1$, $BC = 3x$, $AC = 21$. Then $5x + 1 = 21$, so $x = 4$ and $AB = 9$.
Practice
Point $M$ is between $J$ and $K$. If $JM = 7$ and $MK = 12$, what is $JK$?
Segment addition: $JK = 7 + 12 = 19$.
$B$ is between $A$ and $C$. $AB = x + 3$, $BC = 2x - 1$ and $AC = 17$. Find $BC$.
$3x + 2 = 17$, so $x = 5$ and $BC = 2(5) - 1 = 9$.
$Q$ is between $P$ and $R$. $PR = 30$ and $PQ = 11$. What is $QR$?
$QR = PR - PQ = 30 - 11 = 19$.
