Geometry / Unit 9: Right Triangles and Trigonometry
9.2 The Converse and Classifying Triangles
Notes
The converse lets you test whether a triangle is right. Let $c$ be the longest side.
- If $a^2 + b^2 = c^2$, the triangle is right.
- If $a^2 + b^2 > c^2$, the triangle is acute.
- If $a^2 + b^2 < c^2$, the triangle is obtuse.
- First check the Triangle Inequality: $a + b > c$.
- Example: 5, 8, 10. $25 + 64 = 89 < 100$, so the triangle is obtuse.
Practice
Classify the triangle with sides 9, 12 and 15.
$81 + 144 = 225 = 15^2$.
Classify the triangle with sides 6, 7 and 9.
$36 + 49 = 85 > 81$.
Classify the triangle with sides 4, 5 and 8.
$4 + 5 > 8$, so it is a triangle, and $16 + 25 = 41 < 64$.
