Health / Unit 3: Physical Activity and Sleep
3.3 The FITT Principle
Notes
The FITT principle helps you plan an exercise routine.
- Frequency: how often you exercise (for example, 3 times a week).
- Intensity: how hard you work (easy, moderate, vigorous).
- Time: how long each session lasts.
- Type: the kind of activity (running, swimming, strength training).
- To improve fitness, gradually increase one part of FITT, such as adding 5 minutes to each walk.
- Progressive overload means challenging the body a little more over time.
- Increasing too much too soon raises the risk of injury.
Practice
In the FITT principle, what does "Frequency" mean?
Frequency is the number of times per week.
A student runs for 20 minutes, 3 days a week. Which part of FITT is "20 minutes"?
Time is the length of a session.
A beginner wants to improve endurance safely. Which plan best applies FITT?
Gradual increases reduce the chance of injury.
