Health / Unit 9: Growth, Development and Community Health
9.6 Environmental Health
Notes
Environmental health looks at how surroundings affect health, including air, water, soil, noise and climate.
- Air pollution (from vehicles, factories and smoke) can trigger asthma and lung problems. The Air Quality Index (AQI) tells you when to limit outdoor activity.
- Water must be clean. Water treatment removes germs, and unsafe water can spread illness. Lead in old pipes or paint is harmful, especially to children.
- Climate and heat: extreme heat can cause heat illness. Stay hydrated, seek shade and check on neighbors.
- Noise: loud sounds over time can damage hearing. Keep volume lower on headphones.
- UV radiation from the sun raises skin cancer risk.
- Reduce, reuse, recycle and walking, biking or taking public transit lower pollution.
- Healthy environments include green spaces, safe sidewalks and clean housing.
Practice
Which environmental problem can trigger asthma attacks?
Polluted air irritates the airways.
Why is it important to keep headphone volume at a moderate level?
Hearing loss from noise is permanent.
The air quality alert for a city is "unhealthy" today. What is a good choice?
Limiting outdoor activity helps protect the lungs.
