Notes
Preventing harm
- Most injuries are preventable: wear seat belts and helmets, never text and drive, swim with a buddy and keep smoke alarms working.
- Online: use strong, unique passwords, keep personal information private, think about your digital footprint, spot phishing and tell a trusted adult if anyone threatens or pressures you.
Emergencies and first aid
- Call 911 for unconsciousness, trouble breathing, severe bleeding, chest pain, a seizure, suspected overdose or fire. Give your location, say what happened and follow the operator's instructions.
- Check scene safety first. First aid: direct pressure for bleeding, cool running water for minor burns, RICE for sprains, lean forward and pinch for nosebleeds.
- Hands-only CPR: call 911, then push hard and fast in the center of the chest at 100 to 120 per minute. Use an AED by following its voice prompts.
- Plan ahead for fire and severe weather with exits, a meeting place and a kit.
