Intro to Computer Science / Unit 10: Cybersecurity and Impacts of Computing
10.5 AI, Ethics and Digital Citizenship
Notes
Computing has big effects on society, both helpful and harmful.
- Bias: AI learns from data. If the training data is unfair or incomplete, the AI can give unfair results.
- AI can make mistakes or invent false facts, so important claims should be checked. Be open about when you use AI.
- Digital divide: unequal access to technology and the internet.
- Copyright protects creators' work. Creative Commons licenses let creators allow certain uses. Give credit and follow the license.
- Digital citizenship means being respectful and responsible online: avoid cyberbullying, protect others' privacy, and think about the effect of what you share.
- Example: a hiring AI trained mostly on past hires of one group may unfairly rank other groups lower.
Practice
Why can an AI system show bias?
Biased or incomplete training data leads to biased results.
What is the digital divide?
It describes the gap between people who do and do not have access to technology.
A student wants to use a photo they found online in a school presentation. What is the best practice?
Respecting copyright means following the license and crediting the creator.
