Personal Finance / Unit 7: Taxes
7.3 Computing Sales and Property Taxes
Notes
Tax amount = price (or value) $\times$ tax rate as a decimal.
- Total with sales tax $=$ price $+$ tax, or price $\times (1 + \text{rate})$.
- Example: $80 item, 7% tax: $80 \times 0.07 = 5.60$. Total $85.60.
- Property tax = assessed value $\times$ rate. Example: $150,000 at 2% is $3,000 per year, or $250 per month.
- Sales tax is a regressive burden for low earners because it takes a larger share of a small income, even though everyone pays the same rate.
Practice
A $60 jacket has 8% sales tax. How much tax is charged?
$60 \times 0.08 = 4.80$.
A home is assessed at $300,000 and the property tax rate is 1%. What is the yearly property tax?
$300000 \times 0.01 = 3000$.
You buy items totaling $25 and pay $26.50 total. What is the sales tax rate?
Tax is $1.50, and $\displaystyle \frac{1.50}{25} = 0.06 = 6\%$.
