5.3 Sum and Difference Identities
Notes
- $\sin(A \pm B) = \sin A\cos B \pm \cos A\sin B$.
- $\cos(A \pm B) = \cos A\cos B \mp \sin A\sin B$ (the sign flips).
- $\displaystyle \tan(A \pm B) = \frac{\tan A \pm \tan B}{1 \mp \tan A\tan B}$.
- Use them to get exact values for angles like $75^\circ$, $15^\circ$ and $105^\circ$.
- Example: $\displaystyle \sin 75^\circ = \sin(45^\circ + 30^\circ) = \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\cdot\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2} + \frac{\sqrt{2}}{2}\cdot\frac{1}{2} = \frac{\sqrt{6} + \sqrt{2}}{4}$.
Practice
What is the exact value of $\sin 75^\circ$?
Use $\sin(45^\circ + 30^\circ)$.
What is the exact value of $\cos 105^\circ$?
$\displaystyle \cos(60^\circ + 45^\circ) = \frac{1}{2}\cdot\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2} - \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}\cdot\frac{\sqrt{2}}{2} = \frac{\sqrt{2} - \sqrt{6}}{4}$.
Simplify $\sin 50^\circ\cos 10^\circ - \cos 50^\circ\sin 10^\circ$.
This is $\sin(A - B)$ with $A = 50^\circ$ and $B = 10^\circ$.
