Notes
Sequences and series
- Arithmetic: $a_n = a_1 + (n - 1)d$ and $\displaystyle S_n = \frac{n(a_1 + a_n)}{2}$.
- Geometric: $a_n = a_1 r^{n - 1}$ and $\displaystyle S_n = \frac{a_1(1 - r^n)}{1 - r}$. If $|r| < 1$ the infinite sum is $\displaystyle \frac{a_1}{1 - r}$.
- Sigma notation $\displaystyle \sum_{k=1}^{n} a_k$ adds terms. Useful sums: $\displaystyle \sum k = \frac{n(n+1)}{2}$.
Binomial theorem
- $\displaystyle (a + b)^n = \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}a^{n-k}b^k$, with $\displaystyle \binom{n}{k} = \frac{n!}{k!(n-k)!}$.
Limits
- A limit describes what $f(x)$ approaches as $x$ approaches a value. Substitute if possible; if you get $\displaystyle \frac{0}{0}$, factor or rationalize first.
- A two-sided limit exists only if the left and right limits match. At infinity, compare degrees of the numerator and denominator.
Topics in this unit
Each topic has its own short notes and practice.
Practice
$a_{12} = 4 + 11 \cdot 5 = 59$.
$\displaystyle r = \frac{1}{3}$, so $\displaystyle S = \frac{18}{1 - 1/3} = 27$.
$1 + 4 + 9 + 16 = 30$.
$\binom{4}{2}x^2 \cdot 3^2 = 6 \cdot 9 = 54$.
$\displaystyle \frac{(x - 5)(x + 5)}{x - 5} = x + 5 \to 10$.
The degrees are equal: $\displaystyle \frac{4}{2} = 2$.

Free-response question
An arithmetic sequence has $a_3 = 7$ and $a_8 = 22$.
(a) Find the common difference $d$ and the first term $a_1$.
Show the answer and scoring guide
Five steps change the value by 15, so $d = 3$. Then $a_1 = 7 - 2 \cdot 3 = 1$.

(b) Find $a_{20}$ and the sum $S_{20}$ of the first 20 terms.
Show the answer and scoring guide
$a_{20} = 1 + 19 \cdot 3 = 58$. $\displaystyle S_{20} = \frac{20(1 + 58)}{2} = 590$.

(c) A geometric series has first term 5 and common ratio $\frac{1}{2}$. Find the sum of the infinite series and the sum of its first 3 terms.
Show the answer and scoring guide
Infinite sum: $\displaystyle \frac{5}{1 - 1/2} = 10$. First 3 terms: $5 + 2.5 + 1.25 = 8.75$.
