Psychology / Unit 4: States of Consciousness

Notes
- Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night; most get less.
- Sleep deprivation harms attention, memory, mood, grades and reaction time, and raises the risk of accidents.
- Healthy habits: consistent schedule, no screens before bed, a cool dark room, limiting caffeine late in the day, regular exercise.
- Insomnia: ongoing trouble falling or staying asleep. Sleep apnea: breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Narcolepsy: sudden attacks of sleep during the day. Sleepwalking and night terrors happen in deep NREM sleep.
- Anyone with ongoing sleep problems should talk to a doctor.
