Psychology / Unit 8: Motivation and Emotion
8.2 Maslow's Hierarchy and Hunger
Notes
Abraham Maslow arranged needs in a pyramid. Lower needs generally must be met before higher ones.
| Level | Needs |
|---|---|
| 1 | Physiological (food, water, sleep) |
| 2 | Safety |
| 3 | Belonging and love |
| 4 | Esteem |
| 5 | Self-actualization (reaching one's potential) |
- Example: a student who is hungry and tired may struggle to focus on learning.
- Hunger is influenced by the hypothalamus, hormones such as ghrelin (increases hunger) and leptin (signals fullness), blood sugar, culture and habits.
- Eating disorders are medical conditions, not choices, and can be treated. Anyone worried should talk to a trusted adult or doctor.
