Spanish 1 / Unit 4: The Verb Ser and Personal Pronouns
4.1 Subject Pronouns
Notes
Subject pronouns tell who does the action.
| Spanish | English |
|---|---|
| yo | I |
| tú | you (informal) |
| él / ella / usted | he / she / you (formal) |
| nosotros / nosotras | we |
| vosotros / vosotras | you all (informal, Spain) |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | they / you all |
- nosotras, vosotras, ellas are for all-female groups; a mixed group uses the masculine form.
- In Latin America, ustedes is the only plural "you." Vosotros is used in Spain.
- Usted and ustedes use the same verb forms as él and ellos.
- Spanish often drops the pronoun because the verb ending shows the subject: Soy de Texas = I'm from Texas.
