Spanish 2 / Unit 2: The Preterite of Regular Verbs
2.4 Preterite of leer, creer, oír, caer
Notes
When an -er/-ir verb stem ends in a vowel, the i between two vowels becomes y in the él and ellos forms.
| Subject | leer | oír |
|---|---|---|
| yo | leí | oí |
| tú | leíste | oíste |
| él / ella | leyó | oyó |
| nosotros | leímos | oímos |
| ellos | leyeron | oyeron |
- The other forms keep a written accent on the í.
- Same pattern: creer (creyó), caer (cayó), construir (construyó).
- Example: Ella leyó un libro y ellos oyeron un ruido.
