2.6 Using the Preterite in Context
Notes
Use the preterite for actions that began and ended, happened once, or happened in a specific order.
- Look for time clues: ayer, anoche, el sábado pasado, a las ocho.
- Questions often use the same verb in the answer: ¿Qué comiste? Comí arroz.
- Example: El sábado pasado visité a mi tía. Ella preparó paella y yo lavé los platos.
Practice
Lee: "Anoche Luis estudió dos horas y después llamó a su amigo." ¿Qué hizo Luis primero?
Estudió came before después llamó.
Lee: "El domingo pasado mis primos llegaron a las tres. Jugamos videojuegos y comimos pizza." ¿Qué hicieron a las tres?
A las tres llegaron los primos.
¿Cuál es la respuesta correcta? "¿Qué compraste ayer?"
The question is tú in the preterite, so the answer is yo compré.
