Spanish 2 / Unit 4: The Imperfect Tense
4.1 Forming the Imperfect
Notes
The imperfect describes the past without focusing on a start or end. Drop the infinitive ending and add:
| Subject | -ar (hablar) | -er / -ir (comer, vivir) |
|---|---|---|
| yo | hablaba | comía, vivía |
| tú | hablabas | comías, vivías |
| él / ella / usted | hablaba | comía, vivía |
| nosotros | hablábamos | comíamos, vivíamos |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hablaban | comían, vivían |
- The nosotros form of -ar verbs has a written accent on the á; all -er / -ir forms have an accent on the í.
- The imperfect has no stem changes: querer → quería, dormir → dormía.
Practice
Cuando era niño, yo ___ (jugar) en el parque.
The yo imperfect of -ar verbs ends in -aba.
Nosotros ___ (vivir) en Perú cuando yo era pequeño.
-ir verbs use -íamos, with an accent on the í.
What is the imperfect of "dormir" for "ella"?
Imperfect has no stem changes, so dormir becomes dormía.
