Spanish 3 / Unit 10: The Passive Voice, Se Constructions and Review
10.1 The Passive Voice with Ser
Notes
In the passive voice, the subject receives the action instead of doing it. Pattern: subject + ser + past participle + por + agent.
| Active | Passive |
|---|---|
| Mi abuelo construyó la casa. | La casa fue construida por mi abuelo. |
| Cervantes escribió Don Quijote. | Don Quijote fue escrito por Cervantes. |
| Los estudiantes terminarán los proyectos. | Los proyectos serán terminados por los estudiantes. |
- Ser shows the tense (fue = preterite, será = future, es = present). The participle agrees in gender and number with the subject: las casas fueron construidas.
- The agent is introduced with por and can be dropped: La ventana fue rota.
- The passive with ser is more common in writing, news and history than in conversation.
Practice
¿Cuál es la voz pasiva de "Mi tío pintó la casa"?
The participle agrees with casa (feminine singular), and ser is in the preterite like pintó.
Las cartas ___ enviadas por el director mañana.
Mañana signals the future, so ser is in the future: serán.
La casa fue ___ (construir) por mi abuelo.
The participle agrees with casa: construida.
