Use this guide to choose the right form.

- Certainty (creer, es verdad) = indicative. Doubt or denial (dudar, no creer) = subjunctive.
Practice
Si yo fuera presidente, ___ (proteger) el medio ambiente.
A hypothetical if-clause (fuera) takes the conditional in the result clause.
Dudo que ellos ya ___ (terminar) el proyecto.
Dudo que needs the subjunctive, and the action is already completed: hayan terminado.
Anoche, mientras yo ___ (estudiar), mi hermano llegó.
Mientras describes an ongoing action that was interrupted by llegó, so the imperfect is used.
