Spanish 3 / Unit 4: The Subjunctive in Adjective and Adverb Clauses
4.2 Negative and Question Antecedents
Notes
When the antecedent is nonexistent or in question, the verb is subjunctive.
- Nonexistent: nadie, ninguno/a, nada, no hay... que: No hay nadie aquí que sepa la respuesta.
- In question: ¿Hay alguien que...? ¿Conoces a alguien que...? ¿Hay alguien que hable japonés?
- If the speaker knows the thing exists, use the indicative: Hay alguien que habla japonés.
- Use personal a with alguien and nadie when they are direct objects: No conozco a nadie que viva allí.
- Worked example: No encuentro nada que me guste. (There is nothing I like.)
Practice
No hay nadie aquí que ___ (saber) la respuesta.
Nadie is a nonexistent antecedent, so the subjunctive is used. Saber is irregular: sepa.
¿Hay alguien en la clase que ___ (conocer) a ese autor?
When the speaker does not know if such a person exists, the subjunctive is used. Conocer → conozco → conozca.
Hay un estudiante en mi clase que ___ (vivir) en Argentina.
The speaker knows this student exists, so the indicative is used.
