Spanish 3 / Unit 4: The Subjunctive in Adjective and Adverb Clauses
4.4 Conjunctions of Time
Notes
After cuando, después de que, en cuanto, tan pronto como, hasta que, the mood depends on whether the action has happened yet.
| Situation | Mood | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Future or not yet happened | subjunctive | Te llamo cuando llegue a casa. |
| Habitual action | indicative | Cuando llego a casa, ceno. |
| Past action | indicative | Cuando llegué a casa, cené. |
- No saldré hasta que termines la tarea. (not yet finished)
- Siempre me quedo hasta que termina la clase. (habit)
- En cuanto sepa algo, te aviso.
- Memory trick: if the sentence points to the future, use the subjunctive.
Practice
Voy a llamarte en cuanto yo ___ (llegar) a casa.
The arrival is in the future, so the subjunctive follows en cuanto.
Cuando yo ___ (llegar) a casa todos los días, mi perro me saluda.
A daily habit uses the indicative after cuando.
No voy a salir hasta que tú ___ (terminar) la tarea.
The action has not happened yet, so hasta que is followed by the subjunctive.
