Spanish 3 / Unit 4: The Subjunctive in Adjective and Adverb Clauses
4.6 Reading: Plans and Wishes
Notes
Reading practice: spot whether the speaker talks about a known or unknown thing, and whether the time is future or habitual.
- Lee: Busco un apartamento que tenga dos habitaciones y que esté cerca del metro. Mi amiga tiene uno que está en el centro, pero es demasiado caro. Cuando encuentre algo, lo alquilaré.
- Busco un apartamento que tenga → unknown (subjunctive). Uno que está en el centro → known (indicative).
- Cuando encuentre → future (subjunctive).
Practice
Lee: "Busco un apartamento que tenga dos habitaciones." ¿Qué sabemos?
The subjunctive tenga shows the apartment is unknown or not yet found.
Lee: "Mi amiga tiene un apartamento que está en el centro." ¿Por qué se usa "está" y no "esté"?
The apartment is real and known, so the indicative is used.
Lee: "Cuando encuentre algo, lo alquilaré." ¿Qué tiempo tiene la acción de encontrar?
Cuando + subjunctive points to an action that has not happened yet.
