AP Biology / Unit 3: Cellular Energetics
3.4 Photosynthesis
Notes
$$6CO_2+6H_2O+\text{light}\to C_6H_{12}O_6+6O_2$$
- Light reactions (thylakoids): water splits, $\mathrm{O_2}$ released, ATP and NADPH made. The electron transport chain pumps $\mathrm{H^+}$; ATP synthase makes ATP.
- Calvin cycle (stroma): uses ATP and NADPH to fix $\mathrm{CO_2}$ into sugar.
Practice
The oxygen released in photosynthesis comes from:
Water is split in photosystem II.
The Calvin cycle needs:
It runs on light-reaction products.
ATP synthase in the chloroplast is powered by:
Chemiosmosis.
