AP Calculus AB / Unit 2: Differentiation: Definition and Fundamental Properties
The video for this topic is coming soon. The notes and practice below are ready now.
subtracting 1 from -3 gives -4, not -2
The answer is twenty nine. The derivative is four x cubed minus three. Plug in two. Four times eight is thirty two, minus three is twenty nine.
Bring down the 7 and subtract 1 from the power: $7x^6$.
$\displaystyle \sqrt{x} = x^{1/2}$, so the derivative is $\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}x^{-1/2} = \frac{1}{2\sqrt{x}}$.
$\displaystyle \frac{1}{x^2} = x^{-2}$. Bring down $-2$ and subtract 1: $\displaystyle -2x^{-3} = -\frac{2}{x^3}$.
Bring down $\displaystyle \frac{3}{2}$ and subtract 1: $\displaystyle \frac{3}{2} - 1 = \frac{1}{2}$.
$y' = 3x^2$. At $x = 2$: $3 \cdot 4 = 12$.
$\displaystyle \frac{1}{\sqrt{x}} = x^{-1/2}$. Bring down $\displaystyle -\frac{1}{2}$ and subtract 1: $\displaystyle -\frac{1}{2}x^{-3/2}$.
$\pi^2$ is just a number (about 9.87), so its derivative is $0$.

Let $f(x) = x^3$.
(a) Find $f'(x)$.
$f'(x) = 3x^2$
Give yourself the points you earned:
(b) Find the slope of the line tangent to the graph of $f$ at $x = -1$.
$f'(-1) = 3(-1)^2 = 3$
Give yourself the points you earned:
(c) Write an equation for the line tangent to the graph of $f$ at $x = -1$.
The point is $(-1, f(-1)) = (-1, -1)$ and the slope is $3$.
$y + 1 = 3(x + 1)$, or $y = 3x + 2$
