AP Calculus BC / Unit 6: Integration and Accumulation of Change
6.8 Finding Antiderivatives and Indefinite Integrals: Basic Rules and Notation
Notes
- $\displaystyle \int x^n dx=\frac{x^{n+1}}{n+1}+C$ for $n\ne-1$.
- $\displaystyle \int\frac{1}{x}dx=\ln|x|+C$; $\displaystyle \int e^x dx=e^x+C$.
- $\displaystyle \int\cos x\,dx=\sin x+C$; $\displaystyle \int\sin x\,dx=-\cos x+C$; $\displaystyle \int\sec^2x\,dx=\tan x+C$.
Practice
$\displaystyle \int(3x^2+4)\,dx=$
Reverse the power rule.
$\displaystyle \int\frac{1}{x}\,dx=$
The power rule doesn't apply to $n=-1$.
$\displaystyle \int\sin x\,dx=$
Check: $\displaystyle \frac{d}{dx}(-\cos x)=\sin x$.
