AP Chemistry / Unit 1: Atomic Structure and Properties
1.4 Composition of Mixtures
Notes
A mixture can have variable composition. Elemental analysis can find the percent of a component in a mixture.
- Compare measured mass percent to the pure substance's percent to judge purity.
Practice
A sample of "pure" $\mathrm{NaCl}$ is 55% Cl by mass (pure is 60.7%). The sample is likely:
A lower percent means another substance dilutes it.
Mixtures differ from compounds because mixtures:
Variable proportions.
Which is a mixture?
Two substances not chemically combined.
