AP Chemistry / Unit 4: Chemical Reactions
4.8 Introduction to Acid-Base Reactions
Notes
Brønsted-Lowry: acids donate $\mathrm{H^+}$; bases accept $\mathrm{H^+}$.
- Conjugate pairs differ by one $\mathrm{H^+}$.
- Water is amphoteric (can act as either).
Practice
The conjugate base of $\mathrm{HCO_3^-}$:
Remove one $\mathrm{H^+}$.
In $HF+H_2O\to F^-+H_3O^+$, the base is:
Water accepts the proton.
An amphoteric substance can:
Like water.
