AP Chemistry / Unit 8: Acids and Bases
8.1 Introduction to Acids and Bases
Notes
- $pH=-\log[H_3O^+]$, $pOH=-\log[OH^-]$.
- At 25 °C: $K_w=[H_3O^+][OH^-]=1.0\times10^{-14}$, so $pH+pOH=14$.
Practice
$[H_3O^+]=1\times10^{-3}$ M. pH:
$-\log10^{-3}$.
pH 9 means pOH:
$14-9$.
A solution with pH 4 is ___ times more acidic than pH 6.
Each unit is a factor of 10.
