AP Chemistry / Unit 8: Acids and Bases
8.11 pH and Solubility
Notes
Salts with basic anions (like $\mathrm{OH^-}$, $\mathrm{F^-}$, $\mathrm{CO_3^{2-}}$) become more soluble in acid because $\mathrm{H^+}$ removes the anion, shifting the equilibrium right.
Practice
$\mathrm{Mg(OH)_2}$ is more soluble in:
$\mathrm{H^+}$ removes $\mathrm{OH^-}$.
Adding acid to $\mathrm{CaCO_3}$ increases its solubility because:
Removing a product shifts right.
AgCl's solubility is ___ by adding acid.
$\mathrm{Cl^-}$ is a very weak base.
