AP Chemistry / Unit 8: Acids and Bases
8.2 pH and pOH of Strong Acids and Bases
Notes
Strong acids (HCl, HBr, HI, $\mathrm{HNO_3}$, $\mathrm{H_2SO_4}$, $\mathrm{HClO_4}$) and strong bases (group 1 hydroxides, some group 2) ionize completely.
- $[H_3O^+]$ = acid concentration; $[OH^-]$ = base concentration × number of OH.
Practice
pH of 0.01 M HCl:
$[H^+]=10^{-2}$.
pH of 0.001 M NaOH:
pOH 3.
$[OH^-]$ in 0.05 M $\mathrm{Ba(OH)_2}$:
Two OH per formula.
