AP Chemistry / Unit 9: Thermodynamics and Electrochemistry
9.8 Galvanic (Voltaic) and Electrolytic Cells
Notes
- Galvanic cell: a favorable redox reaction produces electricity ($E^\circ>0$).
- Electrolytic cell: electricity drives an unfavorable reaction.
- Oxidation at the anode, reduction at the cathode. Electrons flow anode → cathode; a salt bridge balances charge.
Practice
Oxidation always happens at the:
"An Ox, Red Cat."
In a galvanic cell, electrons flow:
External circuit.
The salt bridge:
Charge balance.
