AP Environmental Science / Unit 5: Land and Water Use
5.7 Meat Production Methods
Notes
- CAFOs (feedlots): lots of meat cheaply, but concentrated manure pollutes water and antibiotic use promotes resistance.
- Free-range grazing: less concentrated waste, needs more land; overgrazing can cause desertification.
- Meat takes much more land, water and energy per calorie than plants.
Practice
A major problem with CAFOs:
Concentrated waste.
Eating lower on the food chain:
10% rule.
Overgrazing can lead to:
Bare soil erodes.
