AP Environmental Science / Unit 6: Energy Resources and Consumption
6.11 Hydrogen Fuel Cell
Notes
A fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to make electricity, with water as the main product.
- Drawbacks: making hydrogen takes energy (often from fossil fuels); storage and infrastructure are expensive.
Practice
The main product of a hydrogen fuel cell:
$2H_2+O_2\to2H_2O$.
A drawback of hydrogen fuel cells:
Energy to make $\mathrm{H_2}$.
Fuel cells convert:
No combustion.
