8.12 Lethal Dose 50% (LD50)
Notes
$\mathrm{LD_{50}}$ is the dose that kills 50% of a test population. A lower $\mathrm{LD_{50}}$ means a more toxic substance. Usually given in mg per kg of body mass.
Practice
Substance A: $\mathrm{LD_{50}}$ = 5 mg/kg. Substance B: 500 mg/kg. Which is more toxic?
Less is needed to kill.
$\mathrm{LD_{50}}$ is measured in:
Scales with body size.
A 70 kg person and a substance with $\mathrm{LD_{50}}$ of 10 mg/kg. The dose for 50% lethality:
$10\times70$.
