AP Physics 2 / Unit 9: Thermodynamics
9.5 Specific Heat and Thermal Conductivity
Notes
- $Q=mc\Delta T$.
- Rate of heat conduction: $\displaystyle \frac{Q}{\Delta t}=\frac{kA\Delta T}{L}$. Thicker walls and smaller areas slow heat loss.
Practice
Heat to warm 2 kg of water ($c=4{,}186$) by 5 °C:
$2(4186)(5)$.
Doubling the thickness of a wall makes heat conduction:
$\displaystyle \propto\frac{1}{L}$.
A material with high thermal conductivity:
Like metals.
