AP Physics C: Mechanics / Unit 2: Force and Translational Dynamics
2.2 Forces and Free-Body Diagrams
Notes
A free-body diagram shows all forces on one object, drawn from its center.
- Common forces: gravity ($mg$), normal ($F_N$), tension ($F_T$), friction ($f$), applied force.
Practice
A book rests on a table. The forces on it:
Two balanced forces.
On a frictionless incline, the normal force is:
Perpendicular component.
A free-body diagram should NOT include:
Only forces ON the object.
A block on a frictionless incline at angle $\theta$ slides with acceleration:
The parallel component of gravity.
