AP Precalculus / Unit 1: Polynomial and Rational Functions
1.1 Change in Tandem
Notes
A function links an input to exactly one output. Looking at how inputs and outputs change together tells you the function's behavior.
- Increasing: as inputs increase, outputs increase.
- Decreasing: as inputs increase, outputs decrease.
- Concave up: the rate of change is increasing (graph bends upward). Concave down: the rate is decreasing.
Practice
As $x$ increases from 1 to 5, $f(x)$ goes from 10 to 2. On this interval $f$ is:
Outputs go down as inputs go up.
A graph rises and bends downward like the left side of a hill. It is:
Rising, with slopes getting smaller.
A function's zero is an input where:
Zeros are $x$-intercepts.
