AP Statistics / Unit 1: Exploring One-Variable Data and Collecting Data
1.11 Random Sampling
Notes
- Simple random sample (SRS): every group of $n$ has an equal chance.
- Stratified: split into similar groups (strata), sample from each.
- Cluster: split into groups, randomly pick whole groups.
- Systematic: every $k$th individual from a random start.
Practice
Randomly choosing 5 homerooms and surveying everyone in them:
Whole groups are chosen.
Randomly picking 20 students from each grade level:
Each grade is a stratum.
Stratified sampling is useful when:
It reduces variability between samples.
