AP Statistics / Unit 2: Probability, Random Variables, and Probability Distributions
2.5 Mutually Exclusive Events
Notes
Events are mutually exclusive if they can't happen together: $P(A\cap B)=0$.
- Then $P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)$.
Practice
Drawing one card: "heart" and "spade" are:
A card can't be both.
$P(A)=0.2$, $P(B)=0.5$, mutually exclusive. $P(A\text{ or }B)=$
Add them.
For mutually exclusive events, $P(A\text{ and }B)=$
They never happen together.
