AP Statistics / Unit 5: Regression Analysis
5.4 Residuals
Notes
Residual $=y-\hat y$ (actual − predicted).
- A residual plot with no pattern means a linear model fits. A curve means it doesn't.
- Positive residual: the model underestimated.
Practice
Actual 80, predicted 74. Residual:
$80-74$.
A residual plot shows a U-shape. This means:
Leftover curved pattern.
A negative residual means the point is:
The model overpredicted.
