Algebra 1 / Unit 3: Solving Inequalities
3.1 Writing and Graphing Inequalities
Notes
An inequality compares two expressions with $<$, $>$, $\le$ or $\ge$. Its solutions are usually a whole range of numbers.
- "At least" means $\ge$; "at most" or "no more than" means $\le$.
- On a number line, use an open circle for $<$ or $>$ (the endpoint is not included) and a closed circle for $\le$ or $\ge$.
- Shade toward the numbers that make the inequality true.
Practice
"You must be at least 16 to drive" as an inequality for age $a$:
"At least 16" includes 16.
A graph has an open circle at 3 and shading to the left. It shows:
Open circle: 3 is not included. Left: smaller numbers.
Which number is a solution of $2x + 1 > 9$?
$2(5) + 1 = 11 > 9$. For 4 you get $9 > 9$, which is false.
