Algebra 1 / Unit 3: Solving Inequalities

3.2 Solving Inequalities

3 practice questionsNot yet reviewed

Notes

Solve inequalities like equations, with one big rule:

  • When you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, flip the inequality sign.
  • $-3x < 12 \Rightarrow x > -4$.
  • Adding, subtracting, or multiplying and dividing by a positive number does not flip the sign.
  • Multi-step: $5 - 2x \ge 11 \Rightarrow -2x \ge 6 \Rightarrow x \le -3$.

Practice

Solve $4x - 7 \le 13$.
Solve $-5y > 30$.
Solve $3(x + 2) < 5x - 4$.
